PostSubject: Re: LET'S TRY TO SPEAK TURKISH   LET'S TRY TO SPEAK TURKISH - Page 2 EmptySat Aug 09, 2008 4:35 pm

Hehehe! Anytime! I'm in bed 24-7 these days anyway,so I have extra time for ya! Wink

Ok,here we go!

Vocal harmony!
That's the first thing you shoud know before you start with suffixes! Because that's the rule for knowing which suffix you should use...

Suffix is choosing according to the last vocal in the word you have as a basic. So:
After A are coming A or I (adA-yA,adA-yI)
After E are coming E or İ (ev-E,ev-İ)
After I are coming I or A (kadIn-I,kadIn-A)
After İ are coming İ or E (işçİ-yİ,işçİ-yE)
After O are coming A or U (O-nA,O-nU)
After Ö are coming E or Ü (gÖl-E,gÖl-Ü)
After U are coming A or U (ordU-yA,ordU-yU)
After Ü are coming E or Ü (gÜl-E,gÜl-Ü)

This is unique sheme, and it can't be any different...
I think this is the easiest way to explain this, but if you get confused, shoot'n'ask!

Next!

The verb ''to be'' (''imek'') is expressed with suffixes in Turkish...
Suffixer for present are:

1. -(y)im ,-(y)im ,-(y)um, -(y)üm
(Y is putting if word is ending with a vocal, cuz in Turkish you can't have 2 vocals next to eachother: ada-a NO! ada-Ya YES! Exceptions are Arabic and other foreign words...)
2. -sın , -sin , -sun , -sün
3. / (no suffixes)

1. -(y)iz, -(y)iz, -(y)uz, -(y)üz
2. -sınız, -siniz ,-sunuz ,-sünüz
3. -dırlar , -dirler, -durlar ,-dürler (if words ends with Ç H F K P S Ş and T,these suffixes are turning into: -tırlar,-tirler,-turlar,-türler! And suffix ''dır,...'' is usually not used,so suffix can be -lar -ler only...)

Examples:
1.Güzel-im (I'm pretty)
2.Güzel-sin (You're pretty)
3.Güzel-/
1.Güzel-iz
2.Güzel-siniz
3.Güzel-dirler = Güzel-ler

Present of ''not to be'' (''değil'')
1.Değil-im (I'm not)
2.Değil-sin (You're not)
3.Değil-/ (He,she's not)
1.Değil-iz (We're not)
2.Değil-siniz (You're not)
3.Değil-dirler (They're not) = Değil-ler

affraid Sorry if this was too much! I carried away... Embarassed

[color=green]Wow thanks EMine, these tips are very helpful, for I am a learner for Turkish Language as well!!! I found it to be much easier than most languages.

EMine I have a question for you, when it comes to saying things like "Thank you" or "Goodbye" I have found many different ways to say these, can you explain to me which are acceptable for what situations?

PostSubject: Re: LET'S TRY TO SPEAK TURKISH   LET'S TRY TO SPEAK TURKISH - Page 2 EmptyTue Aug 12, 2008 3:37 pm

Yes,of course! No problem at all...

About our greetings, the most usual ''Hello'' is ''Merhaba'' as you all know.
But when you come to more than one person you should say ''Merhabalar'' (plural of merhaba)...
To an old man or woman,we have a custom to say ''Selam aleyküm'',which origin is Arabic, and was used in time of Ottoman Empire (so,not so long time ago)...It's more respectful than ''Merhaba'' and it has an old islamic tradition...

''Günaydın'' is ''Good morning''.''İyi günler'' is ''Good day''.
''İyi akşamlar'' and ''İyi geceler'' are both ''Good evening'',but difference is that before 9pm we're saying ''İyi akşamlar'' and after 9pm ''İyi geceler'',because literaly ''akşam'' means ''evening'' and ''gece'' means ''night''.
''İyi geceler'' is also used for ''Good night''...
Between older people again, for ''Good evening'' they are often saying ''Akşamlar hayır olsun''...Also ''Hayırlı geceler'' for ''Good night''...

Selam is: greeting,regards,hello,...You can use it instead of ''merhaba'' also...

When you're talking to someone and you're leaving, you should usually say ''Allaha ısmarladık'' and the one who's staying answers ''Güle güle''...And the otherwise...

But more used are ''Görüşmek üzere'' (''Till the next seeing/meeting''),also just ''Görüşürüz'' which means ''See you'',and ''Hoşça kal'' means ''Goodbye'' but literal meaning is something like ''stay pleasant''...You can say whatever you like from these,it's not ultimately connected to any of expressions...

You can hear ''kendine iyi bak'' all the time in greetings,it means ''take care of yourself''...
You can answer: Sen de kendine iyi bak! = You also take care of yourself!

For ''Thank you'' the full and the most right thing to say is ''Teşekkür ederim''.Short form of it is ''Teşekkürler''...But there are also many different ways to say thank's to someone.
You probably saw word ''sağ ol'' (or ''sağol'' and ''saol'' between young)...It means thank's,but literal meaning is ''stay healthy''...
When you do something to someone,he will usually say ''ellerine sağlık'' to you.It means thank's also, but literal meaning is ''wish health for your hands'',cuz you did something with them...A French word ''mersi'' can be heard everywhere too...

After saying ''thank's'' you can answer like this: Bir şey değil! (You're welcome! Literally: It's nothing!) ; Önemli değil! (You're welcome! Literally: It's not important!)
; Estağfurullah! (You're welcome! But with more islamic spirit...)

I think this should be it about greetings and thanking...If I missed something you write! I hope I wrote this easy for you,and when you get ready for some other things, scream! Very Happy

You can say ''My name is...'' (Efe for example,it's a male name) like this:
Benim adım Efe. Or just: Adım Efe.
Also: İsmim Efe. (''İsim''=name, has an Arabic origin and it's not used that much)

If you wanna ask someone about his/hers name, you say: Senin adın ne? (or:Adın ne?)

Surname is ''soyad''.So: (Benim) soyadım Öney.

How old are you? Kaç yaşındasın? ; Plural and politness: Kaç yaşındasınız?
I am 20 years old! = (Ben) yirmi yaşındayım.

Where are you from? = Nerelisin?
I'm from Ankara = Ankaralıyım ; I'm from Moscow= Moskovalıyım
Nerede yaşıyorsun? = Where do you live? ; İstanbul'da yaşıyorum=I'm living in İstanbul.
(''Nerede'' we now write as ''nerde''...)
Burada yaşıyorum=I'm living here! (''Burada'' is also written as ''burda'' now...)

Nice to meet you=Memnun oldum
I'm also glad to meet you=Bende memnun oldum

Mother=Anne ; Father=Baba ; Younger brother= Erkek kardeş ; Older brother=Ağabey (now written as ''abi'') ; Younger sister= Kız kardeş ; Older sister= Abla ; Grandmother= Büyük anne (Granny=Nine) ; Grandfather=Büyük baba (Grandad=Dede)

When you want to ask someone does he/she has a brother or sister, you say: Kardeşin var mı?
I don't have=Yok! ; Yes I have=Evet,var!

Are you studying/going to school? = Okuyor musun? (Literaly:Are you reading?)
Are you working? = Çalışıyor musun?

''Peki'' and ''tamam''=OK
''Elbette'' = Of course/Definitely
Evet=Yes ; Hayır=No
''Olur''=It can/May/Ok ; ''Olmaz''=Cannot/May not/No

I can agree with you Empress, I am also a learner of Turkish and the suffixs are indeed the hard part, its like ten suffixes make one work, and ten words together make a sentence!!!!

Emine if you have a rule of suffixs that could help, I would like it!!

I wrote you the vocal harmony already,so suffixes must follow it.
But I guess you are asking me in which order you should put those suffixes...
Well,to be honest,it's hard a lil bit.Hard for me to explain, but I can give you some examples...
Like:

Arkadaşlarınlayım - I'm with your friends.

Arkadaşlar -Friends (plural)
Arkadaşların - Your friends
Arkadaşlarınla - With your friends
Arkadaşlarınlayım - I am with your fiends
